overcoming an ADDICTION

addictionthe fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity.

If you know me, you know that I’ve been an avid Starbucks Goer for several years now. And when I say several I mean over 7 years. I never drank coffee on the daily until I started going to Starbucks. I feel like they put crack in it or something. – HAHA!

For a few years I was able to hide it from my husband, since we did not share a bank account. Once we made the decision to get a joint account is when I began to realize how bad my addiction was. He would remind me each day, each week, each month, how much I spending on a darn coffee. At first it bothered me because it was okay for him to buy cigarettes, but it wasn’t okay for me to spend money on my addiction!? Seems unfair, right? That is the exact way I viewed it.

For the last four years we battled over the amount of money I spent, and continued to spend at Starbucks. He would remind me how much money we would have if I would just drink coffee at home, or just go to a gas station and get coffee. I would get so darn irritated when he would remind of all these things. He just didn’t understand because he doesn’t drink coffee.

It got to the point that every single time he would bring it up I would immediately get defensive. I would throw him smoking cigarettes in his face or how he eats out for lunch everyday, but that didn’t help. I was not able to admit that I had an addiction and that it was out of control.

Over the years I would buy different coffee makers or cold brew packets to brew at home, but it wouldn’t last very long because it wasn’t like Starbucks (because again, they have crack in their coffee!).

Finally, this July I made a promise to myself that I would quit going to Starbucks. I saw a friend of mine post how delicious the Starbucks Cold Brew was from Walmart, so I had to try it for myself. I purchased a bottle that same day, tried it, and LOVED it! I remember telling my husband that this was it, I found the right coffee and I won’t be going to Starbucks any longer. He thought for sure that it would only last a month or so and I would be back on the Starbucks App.

Well, it’s been four months now and I have gone to Starbucks twice. I made a promise to myself that I would only go to Starbucks on special occasions, that way I was able to limit myself. I don’t want to take away that treat altogether.

I understand that everyone fights their own battles and addictions, whatever they may be. Also, I know that some addictions are very dangerous/life threatening and I don’t compare my situation to those. This is the only addiction I have ever had and I am very proud of myself for overcoming it. I never in a million years thought I would be writing a blog post about this topic.
